Emerging Artists are selected by IHS Visual Arts Teachers based on the consistent demonstration of the following criteria:

  • creative/artistic curiosity and imagination
  • strong work ethic, perseverance in the design and art-making process/techniques
  • high quality craftsmanship
  • completed original projects of exemplary creative expression
  • IHS Values

HARRY HE

Harry is recognized as the Photography (Visual Imagery) emerging artist due to his persistent exploration and creative risk-taking in the production of his Advanced Placement 2D Design photography portfolio. He consistently challenges himself to go deeper into his inquiry topic in regards concepts related to “Perception of Time.” His inquiry is still in progress and we are excited to see where this process takes him.

FEBRUARY 2019

CONGRATS! to Daniella Estevez, not only a drawing and painting ART STAR, but a phenom in computer graphics and photography as well. She’s even in AP Art History(!) where she shared some pretty spectacular experiences and research on the Temple Mayor, The Coyolxauhqui Stone and all things Azteca. She has been recognized as one of Irvine High’s Artist’s of the Year!

Mrs. Tucker: AP2D Photography student Lauren S. is not only an excellent photographer with a keen eye, but she also seems to regularly push the envelope with her creative experimentation using a variety of techniques and processes with some inspiring results.

Mrs. Khurgel:  Computer Graphics Student, Callie M.

Callie is an exceptional designer and digital artist, whose work ethic and eye for composition and color give voice to her unique perspective. In looking at Callie’s work, it’s not only evident that she’s fulfilling the requirements of assigned projects, but she additionally conveys a bold and clear message with each project, due to her incisive decision making. She’s also in THREE art classes this semester!! Visual Imagery/Photo and Drawing/Painting, in addition to Graphics. Keep up the great work!

Cindy M. is a freshman Computer Graphics student whose focus and drive have propelled her into developing highly creative, quality digital illustration and work. She has a keen eye utilizing the principles of design to her advantage. MS. PHILLIPS’ CLASSES: VIDEO PRODUCTION // ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION/ITV // ANIMATION: Jessica Le Jessica is currently taking computer graphics and animation. Jessica has a thorough understanding of the elements and principles and has quickly grasped the animation process. Jessica has shown much interest in character design and I look forward to seeing her continue to explore as an animator as she becomes more familiar with storytelling.

Mrs. Tucker’s Advanced Visual Imagery/AP 2D Design:  Karine Codilian Karine is an “Advanced Photographer” in the process of creating an AP 2D Design portfolio. Karine has a strong grasp of Visual Arts compositional techniques and principles in addition to photographic processes. She is concentrating on documenting people in their daily life with creative perspectives. Karine is an exemplary photographer with a great sense of design.

MS. PHILLIPS’ CLASSES: VIDEO PRODUCTION // ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION/ITV // ANIMATION: Xander Lee
Xander is a first year Advanced Video/iTV student. Xander is our Lighting and Color Specialist and has done some phenomenal work so far this year. On set, he is not afraid to take initiative and try new and creative ways to light a scene. And although post production coloring is something new to Xander, he understands that color is an integral part of film, and has incredible power over how we perceive the film and the characters. Xander puts in many extra hours in post production coloring segments, which has really brought our segments to life. Specifically, Xander really helped make our 24 hour film project successful. The use of coloring in this project is what created the tone, led us through the journey, and create a dramatic impact on how we subconsciously relate to the characters. From Mrs. Perales’ AP Studio Drawing class: Sophomore Do Won Suh.

Do Won’s work is exceptional in both skill and concept, seeking to go beyond the traditional, and attempts to connect to personal emotions and memories, many of which contain a bit of whimsy and humor wrapped into her concepts. She is able to look at her work constructively and from all angles. As a matter of fact, try looking at her blue self portrait upside down and see how her expression reacts. Do Won is eager to learn and to push herself to become a better artist and a story teller, connecting with the viewer on an emotional level.

Mrs. Tucker’s Advanced Visual Imagery/Photography class: Senior Hanna Farajian Hanna is a wonderful creative thinker and art maker. She consistently produces original works which combine not only strong vision, but complex concepts and meaning as well.

Mimi is our hidden gem! Her love and passion for the arts is shown through her quality works in animation. Although she is at a high level of skill in multiple mediums, she is always willing to explore new techniques.

While Daniel works to balance the demands of taking three IHS art classes concurrently, in addition to an art class outside of school, he consistently produces high quality work with an eye for composition, color, and form.

 MRS. PERALES’ NOMINATION FOR EMERGING ARTIST OF THE MONTH IS: AP DRAWING STUDENT, Yifei L.

As a sophomore this year, Yifei has not only demonstrated a high level of skill in her work, but an elevated level of thoughtfulness as well. She has the ability to work very literal, but has also been experimenting with mixed media and a variety of conceptual ideas. She enjoys discussing art and has a willingness to get out of her comfort zone to explore new ideas.

SEPTEMBER:
Mrs. Tucker’s nomination for Emerging Artist is: Advanced Photographer//AP2D student Lauren Cohen. LaurenCohen

Lauren is a very intelligent and creative photographic arts student. In addition, she has a diligent work ethic and consistently explores new techniques. Lauren displays curiosity and perseverance when these processes don’t always result in “pretty pictures,” yet she does have a lot of those (pretty pictures) too. Lauren is in her 2nd year of Advanced Photo and is currently working on her AP 2D Portfolio.

Advanced Video Production/iTV student, Juliana Cortes is exceptionally devoted to our iTV program. This year, Juliana is on our Board of Directors in the Department of Communications. Juliana has eagerly taken on the role as a top cinematographer, making her debut as Director of Photography in iTV Broadcast 17.05, and iTV Broadcast 17.1. Juliana has a thorough understanding of lighting techniques, technical knowledge of cameras, and an eye for detail and composition.

AP 2D student, Julia Hui’s narrative illustrations push the boundaries of two-dimensional design. Her detailed, well-observed drawings merge time and space, juxtaposing interrelated images together to produce elaborate narratives. Julia’s work allows the viewer to escape into a world of delicately balanced chaos. Julia is an independent thinker with strong command of her emerging creative expression.

Ms. Lux’s Draw/Paint Class

We have been studying contour line drawing.   Alex Palikian was unhappy with the results of his efforts in class and continued to study and improve his techniques at home.  Alex works very hard in and out of class. He sets high standards for himself.

MRS. PERALES’ NOMINATION FOR EMERGING ARTIST OF THE MONTH IS: AP DRAWING STUDENT, IRENE SUN

Though still in the early stages of her breadth work for her portfolio, Irene Sun has demonstrated extraordinary attention to detail and a high level of skill level within various mediums. She is thoughtful and focused on the direction of her work and takes great care of each piece. Irene is also capable of being both critical and confident in her work, as demonstrated in critiques and group discussions, which is a quality that will continue to push her work throughout the semester.
